Welcome

to the website of "The Ladies Who Read". Since our book group started way back in 1992, we have read a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction, averaging approximately 8 to 9 books per year. The books we have read are listed on the "old selections" page (see menu buttons on the left). Some years we have had themes, some not, and some years unplanned themes developed - such as the year we read several books about mothers and daughters. There were times when everyone loved the book; sometimes, we all hated it! But we read it, and brought our opinions, thoughts and ideas to the discussion! Once in a while, life intervenes and one or more of our members do not get the book read. But that's all right too! We still come to the meeting and, admitting our lapse (sometimes), join in the discussion (or not), listening and enjoying the thoughts and feelings of our friends.

I like that word "friends" as description of our group. We started out knowing some members and not knowing others. Our group has lost and gained members (by invitation, only) over these nearly ten years. As we moved through the years, we got to know each other on a more personal level. We have been with each other through many good times and not so good times. We have watched each other's children grow up, leave home and then, sometimes, return. We have grown close -- listening, learning from, and helping each other. "Friends" describes us very well!

Our group meets at a different member's home about every 4-6 weeks from September to June, with other members bringing food for all of us to enjoy! We have a Holiday Gathering in December, with a gift exchange -of a book, what else! We have attended movies made from books we have read, and seen plays that we have read. We even had a sleepover, where we watched all eight hours of Jane Austin's Pride and Prejudice, a PBS television series. So, we read great books, laugh a lot, care about each other, and find a great deal of satisfaction in being part of the "Ladies Who Read"!!
